Jesus’ Last Prayer
Did you know Jesus prayed for you? In the Gospel of John, the last prayer Jesus prays at the Last Supper is for us- “for those who will believe in me through their word.” That’s you.. And me. And what did he pray for us in this last prayer before he was arrested and crucified? “That they may all be one.”
It’s one of my favorite passages of the scriptures, and it is the gospel passage for the 7th Sunday of Easter. Unfortunately for this passage, the celebration of Christ’s Ascension has been permanently transferred to the 7th Sunday of Easter in most of the US. So it gets missed each year.
But there is the option for us to read it on the 6th Sunday of Easter. Which I am going to do this weekend. It seems a good time for a prayer for unity.
I’m not sure what these ancient words of John want me to say yet. I’m spending the week pondering and praying about what it means for us all to be one. Maybe you might find it a good thing to think about and pray about this week too. If so you can find the link to the 7th Sunday readings here.
