Ballroom Dancing and the Kingdom of God
Back in the early 90’s when my brother was living in Los Angeles the first time, we were having our weekly phone conversation and he told me about a movie that I would really like a lot, and to watch for it when it came to Louisville, and that I needed to go. I promptly forgot the title. More than a year later I read a description of a movie coming to the old Vogue Theater. An Australian movie about ballroom dancing. And I vaguely remembered Henry describing it. So I went. And he was right. I loved it. I went again.
This week, as we remember those who have gone before us into the fulfillment of that Kingdom promised us by Jesus, and dress as our favorites. As we pray for our departed loved ones to be there, saints with the saints, we might try to imagine what that fulfilled Kingdom is like, how it is, where it is. But I’m pretty sure that, at least for me, it’s a lot like that movie, Strictly Ballroom. Someone who loves me dearly, and knows me well, has promised me it will be wonderful, and I will love it. So even though I can’t stretch my brain around imagining the day at the end of days, I don’t really need to. I have deep hope in that promise instead.
