On Receiving Communion
From time to time, I am asked to offer guidance on the norms governing receiving Holy Communion. This most typically occurs weddings, funerals or whenever a person initially worships at a Catholic church. I hope this helps you in answering questions, too.
For Catholics
As Catholics, we fully participate in the celebration of the Eucharist when we receive Holy Communion. We are encouraged to receive Communion devoutly and frequently. Regular participation in the Sacrament of Reconciliation (penance/confession) is encouraged for all.
For our fellow Christians as well as non-Christians
We welcome all to worship with us. For our Christian brothers and sisters, we pray that our common baptism and the movement of the Holy Spirit will draw us closer to one another and diminish any divisions which separate us.
Because Catholics believe that the celebration of the Eucharist is a sign of the reality of the oneness of faith, life, and worship, members of those churches with whom we are not yet fully united are not to receive Holy Communion.
Consistent with the spirit of welcoming, we ask that all of our fellow Christians as well as non-Christians to receive a blessing from the presiding priest or lay people distributing Communion (referred to as Extraordinary Ministers of Communion). Simply cross your arms over your chest to let the minister know of your interest in a blessing. The blessing will be short (as in “know of God’s love for you” is a common one) and is not considered an expression, on your part, of any intent or interest in joining the Catholic Church.
Thank you for worshipping with us!
Peace,
-Fr. Steven
