Jesus, Moses, and Elijah

Every year on the Second Sunday of Lent, we read one of gospels’ accounts of the Transfiguration. The Feast of the Transfiguration is August 6th, but we read the account during Lent as well. Peter, James, and John fall asleep on a mountaintop where Jesus is praying, and they wake up to Moses and Elijah, and Jesus shining in glory. The fulfillment of Jesus’ mission in the resurrection breaks through just a bit on the journey to Jerusalem. And for us, the glory of the resurrection peaks through into the penance and reflection of Lent. As a reminder that we always celebrate the full Paschal Mystery, not just a part of it. Even in the somber days of Lent.
